Wood wrapper? What to do...

So, I’ve been noticing that some cigars, such as the Carlos Torano 1916 Cameroon Corona from a couple weeks ago, have what looks like a thin layer of wood wrapped around the cigar below the ring. Does one remove this before lighting up? Is it worth saving? Does it do anything useful, or is it just ambience?

wood wrapper

Although you may start a new trend, I wouldn’t light up with the wood sleeve around the ‘gar. From what I understand, that wood “sleeve” serves a two-fold purpose. One is to protect the delicate leaf that wraps the cigar. The second reason is to provide a small bit of humidity to the cigar. I’m sure it may insulate the cigar a little to help hold the humidity that is already present within the cigar as well. And ambience probably plays a little into it as well…..it makes it look more expensive. If you DO try and smoke with that sleeve on, post the outcome. Heck, this ol’ redneck will try it, too, if you get a good outcome!
Hope this helps!

Uh, that's ok...

I think I’ll take them off before smoking those. I might, depending on their durabilitiy, try using strips of the woods to light up (assuming they burn well), though I’ll likely just stick to the afterburner lighters.

Now I just gotta ramp up my frequency, as my last 2 orders here came in yesterday, and I’m almost full because “[I] don’t smoke a lot of cigars” so the humidor I was gifted is suddenly really small (and someone had mentioned cigarbid, and I so I bid, and I don’t think I’ll have the room . . . )

emag...

Did you bid on a humi or more cigars? If you want a GREAT place to get a humi, drop me an email. I purchased my 1st one from these guys and it is awesome. The price was definately right and it has worked wonderfully. Let me know if you want some more info….

No new humi yet

I think I’m going to wait and see just how crowded things get in the current humi before worrying. I can also retask some rubbermaid/tupperware/gladware for a short while. Obviously, I’d have to monitor those a little more closely.

I think I’ve about settled on the fact that if I want to keep this up, it’s already time to start getting the parts for a coolerdor…

well...

the reason you should take the cedar strips off is beacuase they are attached by tape…and melting tape RUINS a cigar.

i keep them and 1) put them in my coolerdor/tupperdor (to add to the smell and it helps regulate humidity a bit). 2) dry them and use them to light the cigars….mmmmm, great smell. and since everything about a humi is cedar, it will not adversely effect the taste.

oh, good

I was hoping that I could retask those wrappers for a coolerdor/tupperdor. That makes it less of an imperative to collect old boxes, especially as I can start smallish and “borrow” the containers from the cabinet that I end up organizing anyway. :-)

agree with wtf?

I wold say everything he said and if you ever want to make a coolidor/tupperidor, save as Much cedar you can. Having that element of extra protection and the awesome smell of cigars and cedar is the best.
The ultimate is to completely line the box with that 1/4" pieces of cedar found inside boxes it is a bit overkill if most of the boxes you have in your coolidor are cedar but what they hay I end up doing overkill with every cigar related project I make. lol.
Although if it is small and mostly full of singles it would be a good idea these small piece can also be purchased online if you don’t have a local B&M nice enough to give you some I have never had trouble asking for cedar from my local tobacconist he doesn’t give away boxes but the cedar spacers and such he usually has no problem with giving away.
When I was VERY new to Cigars got a nice bock of cedar from a local B%M so I cut it into nice strips and used hot glue (as it has no smell to ruin the cigars other glue might be acceptable but I don’t know of any that as easy of use) to make a sort of thatch to let the air go through then covered it with a couple of those thin cedar cigar wrappers to cover it and act as protection for my cigars which I like to keep without the celo again some retailers sell these sort of things.
